the new hotel on Købmagergade

Work appears to be moving forward on the large new luxury hotel on Købmagergade that has been described in some accounts as a mega hotel.

This large block of buildings, around a number of courtyards, is close to Trinitatis Kirke and Rundetårn - the Round Tower - with a long frontage to the shopping street and an impressive façade that looks across a quiet square at the east end of the church.

The hotel, being developed by the American investment company Hines, will have at least 240 rooms with a bar and a wellness centre and major retail units on the ground floor - for what are described as high end shops - and there will be 6 large luxury apartments.

As such a major change of use, it is curious that planning consent was granted when it was not in the local plan. It will be interesting to see how such a large hotel can be arranged so that it does not disrupt local traffic.

Copenhagen regularly comes at the top of lifestyle surveys as a place to live and, in part, this is because so many people actually live in the historic centre. With so many large hotels being built in the city there has to be an impact on the city and almost-certainly not in a good way.

what is now to be called the Trinity Quarter with the Round Tower and the church to the left with Købmagergade running left to right

the hotel will be in the large block around 3 tight courtyards running back from Købmagergade and in the large, L-shaped building with the long series of dormer windows fronting on to Købmagergade further to the right
