dredging Nyhavn

We get quite a lot of loud and odd noises on Nyhavn but one of the strangest must be the amplified heavy breathing early this morning.

It turned out to be a large flat barge from By og Havn - the port authority - with a team of men retrieving debris from the harbour. The heavy breathing was from a speaker relaying communication from the diver on the bottom.

Every few metres and a rope with a hook was thrown into the water and another bike or one of the electric scooters was hauled up. There were other things including road bollards, various things that appeared to have fallen off the decks of boats when they were tied up here and, as I watched, a large suitcase. I have no idea what was inside but it certainly caused a lot of laughter when it was opened.

According to Politiken in their update to the news this evening, Frank Jensen, the mayor of the city was on the barge helping and observing …. apparently he is a canoeist so is obviously keen to keep the harbour clear.

How can so much end up in the harbour? Including, somewhere down the main harbour, and again according to the newspaper, five supermarket shopping trollies still linked together. Maybe, there should be an annual competition with Amsterdam although I’m not sure if the winner would the city that had removed most bikes or least bikes from the canals over the previous year.
