LOPPIS / FLEA MARKET - the work of Niels Gammelgaard at Bygning A

Bygning A, Kløvermarksvej 70, 2300 København S

Niels Gammelgaard has designed furniture for IKEA since 1975.

After finding one of his own designs in a Swedish flea market, he began a collection that now forms the basis of this exhibition with many well-known designs with chairs, sofas, tables and shelving systems.

Labels are from the original IKEA catalogues so this is a social history of accessible Scandinavian design but, for many, it will also be a nostalgic reminder of furniture they remember having in their own homes.

NÅLEN I HØSTAKKEN / THE NEEDLE IN THE HAYSTACK

L1056733.JPG

Dansk Architektur Center
Bryghuspladsen 10, Copenhagen

In part, the exhibition celebrates the award to Cecilie Manz of the Nationalbankens Jubilæumsfunds Hæderspris and explores the design process by looking at a number of major projects and at "the tracjectory from intuition to the fnished work."

This is the most elegant and one of the most carefully presented exhibitions that I have seen in the city. Initial models, intermediate protypes and finished designs are set out on pale grey fabric that also acts as a screen for sequences of working drawings from the design studio that are projected down in white outline to show the stages of the design process.

Byen på Tegnebordet / Drawing a City

Københavns Museum / Museum of Copenhagen
Stormgade 18, 1555 København V

From 1886 until it’s closure in 1998, Københavns Kommune - Copenhagen City Council - had it’s own drawing office that employed some of the best architects in the city .

There are 180.000 drawings from the office in the archive. Many shown here for the first time were clearly working drawings so are much thumbed and others are amazing presentation drawings for projects that did not get beyond the drawing board.

The English title of the exhibition is a little ambiguous - in that it might suggest these are sketches or scenes in the city - whereas the Danish, if translated directly, is more specific so this is The City on the Drawing Board.

These are superb drawings, often described in English as technical drawings - so plans, elevations and details of construction drawn to a specific scale - and they include designs for major projects like the White Meat Market in the Meat Packing District, apartment buildings around the city, new schools, engineering infrastructure including water towers and even designs for details of street furniture like city benches. street lighting and advertising stands

S.E. - Snedkernes Efterårsudstilling / Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition 2019

L1088248.JPG

Danish Architecture Centre, Bryghuspladsen 10, Copenhagen

Thirty-five works by cabinetmakers', many working in collaboration with designers and architects working with a theme this year that focuses on climate change and sustainability. There are experiments with new materials, designs that reassess how established materials are used and could be re-used and there are designs that focus on reworking ideas to make them relevant to the way we have to live now and how we may live in the near future. This is about makers understanding their chosen material to explore limits but also to produce beautiful and simple furniture of the very highest quality. After all, the easiest form of sustainability is to buy something we need but that we don't want to throw away.
