RESET MATERIALS towards sustainable architecture

Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center
Refshalevej 173A
1432 København K

The exhibition shows the results of research by ten interdisciplinary teams of architects, artists and manufacturers who have looked at innovative materials for building - like mycelium - or looked at how we can use existing materials in new ways or, even, at ways to use materials, like hemp or straw, that were used widely - at least in vernacular and agricultural buildings, - until a century or so ago.

With pressure to reduce the impact on the environment of all building work, we have to consider if we can use ancient construction techniques so, for instance, use earth and mud, dried in the sun, to build up walls as an alternative to energy-intensive construction materials like fired bricks or concrete.

Bag Facaden / Backstage

Dansk Arkitektur Center /
Danish Architecture Center,
Bryghuspladsen 10, 1473 Copenhagen

As with the exhibition of drawings at the Museum of Copenhagen, the English title for this exhibition is slightly ambiguous whereas the Danish title nails it. Backstage implies something more of the nuts and bolts of what happens through the process of designing and building …. Bag facaden - or Behind the Facade - is much more about the ideas and the discussions and the concept behind the obvious public face of the building …. it’s facade.

The exhibition is arranged into a number of major themes that explore the concepts and the concerns that are driving forward Danish architecture and the headings or titles for these sections …. including Cities are for people; Status quo is dead; Nature is back; Light brings Life and I am my home …. indicate some of the ideas explored.

Byen på Tegnebordet / Drawing a City

Københavns Museum / Museum of Copenhagen
Stormgade 18, 1555 København V

From 1886 until it’s closure in 1998, Københavns Kommune - Copenhagen City Council - had it’s own drawing office that employed some of the best architects in the city .

There are 180.000 drawings from the office in the archive. Many shown here for the first time were clearly working drawings so are much thumbed and others are amazing presentation drawings for projects that did not get beyond the drawing board.

The English title of the exhibition is a little ambiguous - in that it might suggest these are sketches or scenes in the city - whereas the Danish, if translated directly, is more specific so this is The City on the Drawing Board.

These are superb drawings, often described in English as technical drawings - so plans, elevations and details of construction drawn to a specific scale - and they include designs for major projects like the White Meat Market in the Meat Packing District, apartment buildings around the city, new schools, engineering infrastructure including water towers and even designs for details of street furniture like city benches. street lighting and advertising stands

Hiroshi Sambuichi at the Cistern

Cisterne, Søndermarken, Roskildevej, Frederiksberg

The installation, designed by the Japanese architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, brings water back into the subterranean space of The Cistern and uses natural light from above, controlled and directed by giant mirrors, to create a wonderful and disorientating experience with the space explored in deep gloom on broad walkways that have been constructed just above the water by Japanese craftsmen using timber from Japan.
