Public Structures - Kunsthal Charlottenborg Biennale

Public Structures explores the potential of advertising for artists to comment on how "value is constantly constructed and circulated."

The Biennale was curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist - director the Serpentine Galleries in London and Jeppe Ugelvig.

Works are shown in advertising panels and the exhibition opened on the 19 June in the main hall of the central station. From 3 July to 16 July the panels will be shown at numerous venues around Denmark.

POET SLASH ARTIST at Kunsthal Charlottenborg

Commisssioned initially for the Manchester International Festival and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Lemn Sissay, the exhibition has been reconfigured for Denmark and includes the works of 35 Danish and international artists and poets. 

Work from Poet Slash Artist will also shown in streets, and at train stations and bus stops at several hundred locations across Denmark.

This is the first exhibition of what is to be a biennale event.

CHART Architecture

CHART Architecture is an annual competition to design pavilions that are erected in the two courtyards of Charlottenborg and they have a major role as they are the venues for drink and food served through the four days of the CHART Art Fair.

To give focus to the initial design process, there is a theme for each year and this year it was to explore the concept of Social Architecture where spaces and objects “sets a tone and a stage for social or private engagements.”

Forty-six proposals were submitted by graduate students or newly-graduated architects, designers and artists from 28 different countries.

In the Spring five finalists were selected by an international jury that included:

CHART 2019 - CHART Architecture

This evening CHART - the big annual art fair in the city - opened at Kunsthal Charlottenborg - the main venue for the fair in the centre of Copenhagen.

This was an opportunity to see CHART Architecture - five pavilions in the courtyards of the 17th-century palace that were designed by emerging architects from the Nordic region - the finalists selected by an international jury in an open competition earlier in the year. The winner will be announced on Saturday.

The theme set for the competition was materiality - to see how new materials or reused materials could inspire the designs - and the winning entries have been constructed with the designers working with the engineering consultants ARUP.

Through the weekend of the fair - on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 of August and on Sunday 1 September - the pavilions will be the food stalls and bars for the event.

Walking through the courtyards of Charlottenborg at the end of the week, there was intense activity with work moving forward fast on the construction of the temporary pavilions that are now a main and very popular feature of CHART ART FAIR - the annual commercial art fair in Copenhagen - that will open at Kunsthal Charlottenborg on Friday 30 August and continue through to Sunday 1 September.

The five pavilions are winning designs from a completion at the beginning of the year that was open to postgraduate students or newly graduated architects, designers and artists working in the Nordic region.

As in 2019, commercial galleries for furniture and design and designers and design studios will show separately in CHART DESIGN FAIR at Den Frie - the gallery space close to the railway station at Østerport.

Servitudes - Jesper Just at Kunsthal Charlottenborg

Servitudes, a video installation by the Danish artist Jesper Just, has opened at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen.

The architecture of the gallery space plays a strong part in framing or containing a series of eight videos, including one projected onto the floor, and all are synchronised and seen on a proscribed route along a raised metal walkway with a series of ramps that are reminiscent of temporary access ramps for wheelchairs. These take the visitor through the series of large but dimly-lit spaces and rise high enough to mean that at one point it is necessary to duck down to get under a doorway that normally forms a high and wide link between gallery spaces.

Each film is on a continuous loop and dominate your view point so distort any real sense of scale or time and most visitors seemed to watch each film through so another and strong element of the exhibition is the groups of people seen as silhouettes leaning against the rails of the walkways or, in one gallery, sitting on a bank of platforms.

The videos too have a strong architectural theme and were filmed at One World Trade Center. One has a series of lift doors in a large lobby that are opening and closing to no discernible pattern but with no one entering or leaving and one film has a young woman in a barely-furnished space looking out through high plate-glass windows at a landscape of the city skyscrapers. In another, the camera pans slowly across a finely-detailed glass and steel façade broken by rhythmic tapping that eventually resolves into a young girl, back to the camera. striking a panel at street level with a stone.

The catalogue rightly describes the exhibition as mesmerising.

Solar Egg by Bigert & Bergström is not just an amazing sculpture but is also a sauna and it has been set up in the courtyard of Kunsthal Charlottenborg … the Royal Academy of Fine Art in the centre of Copenhagen.

You can book the sauna on Wednesdays, when it is free, or on Saturdays and Sundays and you can rent a towel, slippers and a kimono though you have to bring your own huzzpah … this is a large and popular public square.

BIG Art at Kunsthal Charlottenborg

An impressive and entertaining exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg with large-scale works created by artists working with the architectural studio of BIG and primarily for major new buildings or for public spaces.

Each work has a video presentation by Bjarke Ingels and this confirms that he is one of the most articulate proponents of modern architecture and planning.

Out of Ousia - Alicja Kwade

Through six large gallery spaces at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, this is the first solo exhibition in Denmark to show the work of Alicja Kwade. ‘Ousia’ is Greek and means being or essence.

One large-scale work in the first gallery, DrehMoment, with large stone spheres balanced on a frame was created in 2018 specifically for Charlottenborg.

The annual Autumn fair in Copenhagen for contemporary art opened on Friday 31 August and then continues through the 1 and 2 September. CHART celebrates “Copenhagen’s tradition of art, design and architecture, and its values of liveability and inclusion.”

The main venue - with 32 galleries from the Nordic region participating to show paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography - is in the rooms on the first floor at Kunsthal Charlottenborg … the home of The Royal Danish Academy of Art on Kongens Nytorv .

Over the weekend there are also many events including CHART FILMS, CHART TALKS and CHART PERFORMANCES and CHART MUSIC.

Charlottenborg and its gardens were constructed in the 1670s for the son of Frederik III but since 1753 the palace been the home of Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In part it was rebuilt by C F Hansen in the 1820s but the exhibition rooms date from the 1880s and it is the windows of the those buildings, facing towards the canal of Nyhavn, that have been barricaded with more than 3,500 life jackets collected from refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos.

The work by Ai Weiwei will remain at the Kunsthal Charlottenborg until 1st October 2017.
