coat hangers by Roald Steen Hansen
/On the first weekend in October there was a massive flea market at the Bella Center in Copenhagen with something like 700 stalls. There was a good selection of mid-century furniture as well as lighting, ceramics and glass from the mid and late 20th century.
Along with a couple of other things, I bought these two coat hangers that were designed by Roald Steen Hansen in 1974.
Born in 1942, Hansen trained at the School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen and taught at the Danish Design School. The hangers are in beech. There is a metal bar that is fixed to the wall and then the tuned knop, which has a channel cut in the back, slots over the bar and is held in place with a grub screw. The loop of the hanger drops over the knop and a thin ring of rubber helps to stop it sliding forward. Simple, beautifully made and a bit of sculpture when not being used for jackets and coats.
