Hygge is a Danish word that has no precise equivalent in English. Some would say that it means cosy but that rather underplays the breadth and the importance of the concept for Danes. Hygge implies good living but not in an ostentatious way so basically it is a word used to describe something or a situation that is warm and comfortable and with a dose of love and friendship - oh yes - and usually it involves candles.
So ... a group of friends and family sitting around a table in the warm on a winter evening, talking and finishing off a good meal and having another drink and ignoring the dark and the cold outside … oh and with lots of candles. That’s hygge.
